There’s also ‘Goin for Ten’ featuring a verse and hook from Quavo, one of the biggest rappers from Atlanta, who dominates the track. The project features ‘New Glock’, a haywire track with some amusing, menacing lyrics from Famous Dex and a comical verse from Ugly God (who managed to get onto the XXL cover). The remix by Lil Yachty is awesome too.ĭex already released eight mixtapes since coming out in 2016, with most of his distinctive tracks coming from ‘Dexter the Robot’ that has some Ed Edd and Eddy themed artwork. Add to that his mumbling style and a catchy, distinctive beat and you have a pretty sick turn up track. My favourite track of his so far is ‘Drip From My Walk’, which has a swaggy fun energy to too it. A lot of the beats are de jure, which makes total sense and fits well with his wild persona on record. His production selections usually consist of rumbling trap drums and melodic piano. ‘New Wave’ is a more chilled out offering from the affiliated rappers in another music video filmed in LA, this time on the iconic Venice Beach strip:ĭex has more star power between the two, with a more distinctive image and magnetic personality. The track essentially amounts to bass boosted dumb flexin. The track ‘Rich Forever’ is pretty typical of their output. The people over XXL reasoned that because the XXXTentacion beating wasn’t on camera, they could let him on the cover.Īnyway, I’ve written this article because I believed Dex would make it, and because he deserves at least a glance as a prospective 11th XXL Freshman.įamous Dex is Rich the Kid’s protege, and was signed to Rich the Kid’s label ‘Rich Forever Music’ in March 2016, and as such they feature on each other’s songs quite a lot. XXXTentacion has committed similar acts -he was locked up for beating up his own pregnant girlfriend – and yet he’s managed to get on the cover. But in a way, there is some duplicity going on here.

Essentially Dex has been non-platformed by XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten, who ultimately decides the Freshman list. Plus he has a cartoonish and quirky quality to him: he’s tatted up like a cholo and his face looks like a shrunken head. I certainly thought he was going to make it too, as the guy has many of the tropes associated with XXL Freshman of late: a controversial style, wild hair, distinctive ad libs ‘ohh man God damn’ ‘er-ya/er-way’ (you’ll understand what I mean when you listen) and an oddball swag. It came as a big surprise to many people that Famous Dex wasn’t on there, as he had been considered a shoe-in for the cover this year. And to the shock of many, Famous Dex was excluded from XXL cover. Earlier this month the XXL Freshman 2017 cover was released.
